RC5HL 2017 Setup Guides and Video Help

Post by Admin » Tue Jun 13, 2017 12:48 am

Hey All

This post is a reference guide for the RC5HL 2017 unit. Here you will find links to videos and other helpful info surrounding the RC5HL.

In addition to this page the old forum contains much info on the RC5Hl and RC2HL

Important Information
Ok lets get on the same page as to what the RC5HL does and how.
First up the RC5HL is a mere converter of standard hobby RC protocol to a format that the RX18 (27mHz) board can understand. Hence, the RC5HL does not impart any extra functions or alter the functions of the RX18 in any way. It only replaces your "toy" radio with a proper hobby one. HOWEVER, by doing so it opens up all of the goodies associated with real hobby R/C. Thus it becomes easy to add additional functions such as extra switching options, use of servos, telemetry to monitor in real time your battery status,...

Because the RC5HL acts as an interpreter for the RX18 it is governed to some extent by how the RX18 expects to see information. Hence, the RC5HL needs to be setup in a specific way. This setup is both logical and basic but contains a common sense assumption that for some unknown reason may not be followed by some r/c receivers.

Ok the RC5HL expects to see from the receiver in the following order
First signal - CH1 - Steering plugs into input 1
Second signal - CH2 - Acceleration/Motor plugs into input 2
Third signal - CH3 - Gun elevation/Weapons plugs into input 3
Fourth signal - CH4 - Turret control plugs into input 4
Fifth signal - CH5 - Ignition/Switching plugs into input 5

For almost all receivers less than 6 channels this is all good - plug in like this and all will be fine. However, some brands are so geared towards planes that the channels are NOT labelled in order but refer to plane bits - ELE, AIL, RUD, THR and so on. With these brands it is hard to know what channel is output first from the receiver and can cause much angst as you swap around channels to see what works. To make matters worse heavily aircraft orientated radios are difficult to convert to both gimbals self centering and may have by default much reduced channel widths.

In addition to the above there are some receivers that even marked 1-8 do not output channels in order. The best examples are the Turnigy 8 channel receiver used by the 9X series and Spektrum/Orange receivers greater than 6 channels. Special code for the RC5HL had to be written for these receivers. The RC5HL will access this code depending on the position of the receiver select jumper. If using Spektrum/Orange receivers greater than 6 channels place the jumper across the bottom 2 pins. If using the Turnigy 8 channel receiver jump the top two pins. With all other receivers you can remove the jumper entirely. In addition to jumping the top two pins if using the Turnigy 8 one must ALSO swap around at the receiver CH2 and CH3. Please refer to the video above.

Cheers 4 now
