Post subject:  Microswitch removal for true firing action

Hi All

Ok here is a very quick guide on how to bypass the microswitch trigger on your Heng Long/ Taigen bb or recoil unit. This microswitch triggers the actual firing procedure on the Taigen/Heng Long MFU's. The problems is that this switch does not close as soon as you go to fire using the hand controller. Instead the recoil/bb unit must recoil backwards eventually tripping the microswitch, closing the contacts and initiating the fire procedure. If you wish to have any sort of realistic recoil you must do away with this microswitch and replace it with a switch that operates as soon as you activate fire.

Here is how to do this using a simple 5 volt relay

Step 1
Grab your 8 pin cable

Step 2
Remove the middle two wires by using a fine point to gently press down on the locking tab and carefully puling out the wire.

Step 3
Solder two short lengths of wire - one (red) piece to the yellow cable and the other (black) to the brown cable

Step 4
Reinsert back into plug

Step 5
Solder these wires to the relay coil contacts. NOTE some relays are polarity sensitive so LOOK at your relays datasheet. Yellow/Red is V+ and Brown/Black is V0.

Step 6
Get two more lengths of wire and solder these to the NORMALLY OPEN contacts of your relay. Unless you have a supply of JST crimps and plugs use an already made up 2 pin cable as shown in Step 7.

Step 7
Your assembly should now look like this.

Step 8
Connect to your RX18 or Taigen 2.4gHz MFU and mod is complete

Interesting, I've not seen it done with a relay before. I seen it done with a diode, although with the RX18 it often repeat fires. Although I understand this is not a problem with the Taigen units.

HI Ian

In my opinion this is by far the best way to get the job done as the Relay operates in the same manner as the micro switch in that it physically switches.

Never liked the diode way.

Cheers and Merry Xmas

I can imagine it working very well, with the slight inherent time delay in the relay operating. And again not suffering from the multiply firing the diode method has.

Merry Christmas everyone.

The relays that I use on MAKO2 and usually for this mod since I have them lying around have a typical operation time of 1 millisec (3 msec MAX) according to the datasheet.

I can't say that I have ever noticed any delay. In fact the relays are timed to turn on in millisecond increments to allow for the differences between the Taigen and Heng Long MFUs.

Still there maybe some older types of relay with greater operation times so I guess it would pay to have a look at the datasheet for any relay that you intend to use.

Many thanks for posting this.

Kevin you have truly gone above and beyond to help me with this mod.

Finally got all the bits for this!!

Works a treat. Combined with the Dragon ATRC with a 3mm LED muzzle flash on my Tiger 1. Had some difficulty soldering to the connector pins so spliced into the cables.

Apart from removing the metal barrel insert the BB unit can be easily reinstated if required.
Job done.

Hi CK

No you need to keep the microswitch and remove the Clark TK22... and get an Asp :).

But in answer to your question you could try a simple resistor capacitor charging circuit. Have a look at these pages

Sorry I can't give any schematics or offer any values as I have never owned (nor ever will) a Clark product so I don't know how things are wired or what time periods are involved.

Cheers
KG
