Hey Gra
I just spent an hour writing a reply on this and lost it cos I was not logged in
Yep I agree with you
But, as was well detailed in the post that I lost you shouldn't worry about the 3 kgs thing.
What SGS are trying to convey is the amount of power that can be supplied rather than how much a tank should weigh.
OK lets suppose we have a 5 kg tank that is well setup with axles on bearings, straight wheels, nice motor and gear box, well lubed. Rolls along just by pushing it with one finger. On the other hand we have a 3 kg tank not so well set up, wheels out of alignment and a bit sticky cos you didn't mask the axles when painting, crappy Heng Long motors and gearbox
will not budge along the ground with one finger pushing it. Any decent controller, ElMod, SGS, Hooben, Heng Long will push your 5 kg tank along with no problems. Now all controllers will need to provide more power to the motors of the 3 kg tank to get that baby moving. What SGS are saying is that as long as those wheels can move on that 3 kg tank the SGS unit will power it along. Taken to the extreme let's get a 2 kg tank and super glue it's wheels and no controller, ElMod, SGS, Hooben, or Heng Long is going to move that sucker.
A hard enough concept to explain English to english now imagine having to do that from German to English. A lot easier to just give a weight recommendation. Unfortunately it has caused undue concern (even to me initially) and the weight reference appears to have been dropped from the new English versions of the manual.
Would I have any worries with these units in ANY of my existing tanks - nope none at all.
Would I put one in the new range of all metal tanks - yep BUT I'd want to 'future proof' myself and I'd get the TRF10 series instead of the 05 series. Why? Beacause the TRF10 series can allow you to upgrade your power module to up to 100 Amps/motor. That's enough to power a golf buggy
Probably wouldn't need it a stock standard ELMOd, SGS, Hooben, even a Heng Long could do the job fine. BUT if you start going into the 'All Metal' series of 1/16 tanks then there is only one way to go from there and that's into the domain of PanzerIVman and 1/6th scale. You can then just pop out your TRF10 board and add on an upgraded power unit and drive away in your 1/6th scale beast (or have a remote controlled golf buggy).
Cheers
